Culture, Not Politics

We live in a politicized time. Culture wars and increasingly partisan conflicts have reduced public discourse to shouting matches between ideologues. But rather than merely bemoaning the vulgarity and sloganeering of this era, says acclaimed author and editor Gregory Wolfe, we should seek to enrich the language of civil discourse. And the best way to do that, Wolfe believes, is to draw nourishment from the deepest sources of culture art and religious faith.

Wolfe has been called “one of the most incisive and persuasive voices of our generation,” and this penetrating and wide-ranging book makes a powerful case for the importance of beauty and imagination to cultural renewal. He begins by tracing his own journey from a young culture warrior bent on attacking the modern world to a career devoted to nurturing the creation of culture through contemporary literature and art that renew the Western tradition. Along the way, Wolfe finds in Renaissance Christian humanists like Erasmus and Thomas More—and their belief that imagination and the arts are needed to offset the danger of ideological abstractions— a “distant mirror” in which to see our own times.

Beauty Will Save the World Recovering the Human in an Ideological Age eBook Gregory Wolfe

Gregory Wolfe is a Christian Humanist on a mission. He is not interested in engaging in political debates but in injecting values into the worlds of literature, music, and art. Mr. Wolfe is a book and magazine publisher who is bent on influencing the cultural world. The essays in this book introduce us to the thoughts and contributions of great writers and poets. Some you will be familiar with and others you won't but I am certain you will benefit from Mr. Wolfe's insights into the contributions of people like Erasmus, T.S. Eliot, Malcolm Muggeridge, Robert Bolt, Flannery O'Connor, etc. I learned a great deal from this book and look forward to engaging some these writers on my own.

Beauty Will Save the World Recovering the Human in an Ideological Age eBook Gregory Wolfe Reviews

Some fine writing here, but the author seems afraid to make fine distinctions or say anything that his audience might find difficult. Although Gregory Wolfe admirably articulates that the culture wars are fruitless, he ridicules Oscar Wilde in order to pander to his Christian audience. Trashing Oscar Wilde--while writing about artistic beauty, for Christ's sake--is unsound, even if it was ten years ago and popular to do so.

Recently Greg has "come out" in favor of gay authors, but it seems a bit pandering at this time, when such writing is highly popular, even expected. Perhaps Greg had other intentions when writing this book than the sentiments that come across. He has distinguished himself as editor of Image, and many of his choices there were quite intelligent.
If you are considering the question of how the arts, creativity and beauty can be used to help us all from falling apart, you need to read this book.
A book in half. The title is extremely promising, but the unfolding is lost in the attempt of the author to put Christianity as reference of an evolution in the conception gives art. Begins with beauty and art, something that was very positive until page 120 and then when describing at length auditors and painters the central concept of the book is lost. Either the intention was not clear or the title did not define well the book's proposal. Read on to page 120. The rest there are few parts that are worth the interest.
I do believe that beauty will save the world. Not politics nor power. Gregory Wolfe writes beautifully and convincingly. He is talkig about beauty that is created by human beings, but he also helps me to think of Divine Beauty shining out in our world as well as in works of art. He is a fine critic. He mentions a lot of titles that are now on my must-read list.
Wolfe is a life saver to the Christian tradition of art and literature. Sharp and insightful. He opened the world to me and I'm forever grateful. His work and dedication is saving the world.
I loved reading this--it was really well-written and researched and laid out all sorts of information relating to what beauty is and what it means to us, even if we don't seem to value it currently in our cultural climate, and that beauty will make the difference ultimately.
His premise is solid. Makes one want to be part of the effort to transform today's garish culture into a tomorrow of more pleasing aesthetics. Perhaps a longing for beauty and a repulsion at the ugliness of our culture will turn people back to faith, the source of all beauty.
